I was invited there to speak to their congregation based on volunteer work that I had done abroad, to a location in which the church had been sending donations. They were very appreciative of the speech and were quite interested in continuing to donate to the cause. However, after my speech the Priest got up and told the crowd that they could even make a difference here in their local community – and that they could start by all going to the poles to vote against gay marriage. I felt very uncomfortable and certainly don’t feel I would have been invited to speak had they realized I was an openly gay man.
