The Magic City Acceptance Center (MCAC) funded by the Elton John AIDS Foundation, Protective Life Foundation, Mike & Gillian Goodrich Foundation, Mystic Krewe of Apollo and local individuals provides a center for LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning) youth in the Birmingham community. The location of MCAC is 412 37th Street South and opened April 1, 2014. Since April 2014, MCAC has served 130 unduplicated LGBTQ youth with our programs.
    All current programming at MCAC are offered free of charge and include: support groups; Birmingham Alliance of Gay, Straight, and Lesbian youth (BAGSLY), a support and social group; art classes; talent shows; counseling; Steel City Spectrum, a trans-specific support and resource group ; resource center; drop-in hours; computer lab; movie nights; health and wellness workshops; HIV testing and education; skill building classes (how to balance a checkbook, professional lecture series, etc.); yoga classes, clothing swap nights; PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) meetings and board meetings; staff and resources to connect LGBTQ youth to community and national resources and other LGBTQ youth-centered activities. Programs that will be starting in the next 6 months include: in collaboration with UAB, a free STD testing site with LGBTQ medical students (July 2015); Magic City Home Host Program, a home host program for homeless LGBTQ youth ages 19-24 (October 2015); free LGBTQ legal clinic (July 2015).
