Growing Up Hayden

We’ve named our blog, Growing Up Hayden because we feel it’s a testament to what it is to live in the now, in a world where the LGBT community is fighting for acceptance and equality.  Our content is focused on all aspects of what it is to live, love and thrive in what’s still a very judgmental world.  Growing Up Hayden is a live narrative that we hope will continue to illustrate positive changes and a more and more loving, open and welcoming world.

Tim Kaine Speaks Up For LGBTQ Youth

In honor of National Coming Out Day, Vice Presidential Candidate, Tim Kaine, addressed the issue of LGBTQ students being bullied in schools. “LGBT kids get bullied at a rate much higher than others.  As part of school safety funding, we need to make sure that the school districts that receive funding are really serious about reducing bullying.” Kaine says in a video posted on ATTN.com.

Kaine also had a message for school administrators.  He says, “It’s really important for adults, especially adults in leadership positions, to be very public about a message of, ‘Accept who you are, you’re going to be able to live a great life, just as you are.’  It’s important to let kids know, be who you are, be proud of who you are.  You’re made the way you’re made for a reason. You should celebrate that and accept it and not feel bad about it.”

Kaine proved ‘he’s with her’ as the Clinton campaign said : “As someone who has been standing up to bullies her whole life, Hillary Clinton, together with Tim Kaine, will continue fighting for the the LGBT community and celebrates National Coming Out Day.”

Sara Ramirez of Grey’s Anatomy Comes Out

Right before National Coming Out Day on October 11, former Grey’s Anatomy star Sara Ramirez talked about her bisexuality.  She “came out” during a youth conference centering around the LGBT homeless community.

“Because of the intersections that exist in my own life: woman, multi-racial woman, woman of color, queer, bisexual, Mexican-Irish American, immigrant, and raised by families heavily rooted in Catholicism on both my Mexican and Irish sides, I am deeply invested in projects that allow our youth’s voices to be heard,” Ramirez said at the conference.

A number of organizations have praised the actress, including the True Colors Fund.

Strut

The Oxygen Channel debuted a new modeling reality show in September.  Strut is executive produced by Whoopi Goldberg and features Slay Model Management, the first modeling agency to cater exclusively to the transgender community.

“Our models come from all walks of life, all different backgrounds and ethnicities.  They are struggling with things we can all relate to – trying to make ends meet, fighting to make a name for themselves and navigating the minefields of personal relationships,” said Executive Producer Goldberg. “All of these struggles are amplified by the fact that they are also fighting to break down barriers and taking on the responsibility of representing the transgender community in today’s society.  It’s time to separate caricature from real people and that’s what we are doing with ‘Strut.’”

Strut provides an exclusive behind-the-scenes look into five determined models lives. These models will struggle with career goals and their personal / family lives.  “As they strive to overcome hurdles in the quest to discovering their true identity, the models are faced with owning who they are—no matter the cost.”  These models are working “to break down barriers in the modeling industry and the world around them.”

England Recognizes LGBTQ Historical Sites

Historic England is an organization that provides legal protection to buildings and sites of historic significance.  Last year, the organization added buildings and sites to their registry that showcase “queer history.”  Duncan Wilson, the chief executive of Historic England, said that the decision was “part of a deliberate policy of looking at what we protect and commemorate by a listing, to see that it is more representative of society as a whole.”

This year, Historic England announced six buildings and sites that they are preserving for LGBTQ history.

1. Amelia Edward’s Grave Amelia Edwards was a writer, musician and founder of Egyptology in St. Mary’s Churchyard in Bristol.  She lived with her partner, Ellen Braysher, in Weston-super-Mare.  Edwards died of pneumonia in 1892, a few months after Braysher’s death.

2. The Burdett-Coutts Memorial The Burdett-Coutts Memorialat located at St. Pancras Gardens in London, commemorates the Chevalier d’Eon.  The Chevalier d’Eon was sent to Russia as a spy, fought in the Seven Years’ War and was a diplomat that helped negotiated the treaty that ended war between Britain and France. The Chevalier lived the first part of his life as a man, and the last few decades as a woman. This remarkable story has inspired art and plays.

3. 34 Tite Street The house at 34 Tite Street, in the Chelsea neighborhood of London, once housed Oscar Wilde, his wife, Constance Lloyd, and their two children. In 1895, Wilde was put on trial for “gross indecency.” He was convicted of having sex with men and sentenced to two years of hard labor.  The law under which he was convicted was not repealed until 2003. The house, which has a blue plaque outside, is still a private residence.

4. Red House The Red House, located in Aldeburgh, which is a town on the east coast of England, was home to Benjamin Britten and his partner, the tenor Peter Pears. They lived together there from 1957 until Britten’s death in 1976. The house, run by the Britten-Pears Foundation, is open to the public.

5. Shibden Hall Shibden Hall is located in Halifax in West Yorkshire and was the home of Anne Lister. Lister was a landowner who kept diaries.  Part of these diaries were in code to cover up her relationships with women.  She lived in the house for several years with her partner, Ann Walker.

6. St. Ann’s Court St. Ann’s Court, located in Chertsey, which is a suburban town in Surrey.  This house has been called an example of “queer architecture” by Historic England. The house was built between 1936 and 1937 and designed by Geraldd Schlesinger and Christopher Tunnard. The gay couple designed the house in response to laws that made homosexual sex a crime, even in the privacy of one’s home. So the home’s master bedroom could be separated into two, which lead visitors to believe that the two men slept separately.

The United States has also begun to recognize LGBTQ historical sites. President Obama designated the Stonewall Inn as a national monument in June 2016.  The Stonewall Inn was the location of a 1969 police raid and then protest that spear headed the LGBTQ rights movement.

Cab Company Defends Homophobic Driver

If you are travelling to Portland, Oregon and need transportation, be careful who you call for a ride. On a Tuesday night in September, a Portland Taxi Cab Company car, pulled up outside Scandals, a popular gay bar. The driver of the cab took out a bull horn and yelled anti-gay slurs at the bar patrons. The cab driver told the bar patrons that they were all going to hell, but that he could help get them get out of their “difficult lifestyle.”

Portland is known as an LGBTQ friendly city but when the bar patrons complained to the Portland Taxi Cab Company they were told that there would be no disciplinary action against the driver. “If the gays don’t want to use our company, that’s better for us.”

“Google Me, I’m Not Hiding.”

In the past when questioned about her sexuality, Kristin Stewart declined to comment.  However she would insinuate that the rumors about her relationship with Alicia Cargile were true.  Steward told reporters to “Google me, I’m not hiding.”

However Stewart told Elle UK recently that she worried keeping her personal life hidden communicated that she was ashamed of the nature of her relationships with women. “It changed when I started dating a girl,” she continued. “I was like, ‘Actually, to hide this provides the implication that I’m not down with it or I’m ashamed of it, so I had to alter how I approached being in public. It opened my life up and I’m so much happier.’”

Stewart opened up about her personal life in that interview last month with Elle UK.  It is the first time she has publicly confirmed dating women and her sexuality.
