Growing Up Hayden

We’ve named our blog, Growing Up Hayden because we feel it’s a testament to what it is to live in the now, in a world where the LGBT community is fighting for acceptance and equality.  Our content is focused on all aspects of what it is to live, love and thrive in what’s still a very judgmental world.  Growing Up Hayden is a live narrative that we hope will continue to illustrate positive changes and a more and more loving, open and welcoming world.

Trying to Get Hitched in Alabama?

nunst002Alabama’s latest response to the SCOTUS ruling on same-sex marriage would be brilliant if it weren’t so ignorant.  From what we understand, the state is apparently considering banning marriage licenses for good.  In other words, if everyone can get married no one’s getting married.

Is this liberty and justice for all?  More like injustice for all and horribly un-American.

Are you or have you recently tried to tie the knot in Alabama?  If so, we want to hear from you.  Write to us and share your experience.

A Rugby Win!

_84934395_hirst_paToday the sport of rugby gets a win as Keegan Hirst comes out and says he’s gay.  Recently separated from his wife, this professional rugby player has taken a bold step in being true to himself.  In an interview with the BBC, he talks courageously about how he wasn’t sure about his own sexuality, thought he was just “going through a phase.”

“Only recently have I got it right in my head,” he said.  His struggle through denial reflects an experience that many people in the LGBT community face.

While Hirst is being commended for coming out as the first openly gay rugby player, the entire sport deserves a standing ovation for proudly stating it’s “open to all.”  Chief executive of the Rugby Football League, Nigel Wood, in an interview with the Guardian said, “I feel it’s hardly an issue worthy of comment because why shouldn’t a player come out and say that they’re gay?”

We Heart Kristen Stewart

Times are a-changing.  And fast.

The big deal used to be about coming out.  Now the big deal is NOT coming out.

Kristen Stewart tells the Hollywood Reporter, “I think in three or four years, there are going to be a whole lot more people who don’t think it’s necessary to figure out if you’re gay or straight,” she said. “It’s like, just do your thing.”

We like that idea a lot, Kristen.  In fact, that’s how it should be!

Here’s to enlightened celebrities doing their thing.

Too Cool for School ?

Bye bye fun, get your homework done,
you better be in bed by ten, it’s back to school again!

Love it or hate it, school is a rite of passage for all. However the educational environment is tougher for our LGBT youth. GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network) states that an LGBT high school student will hear, on average, twenty-six slurs a day.

From pre-school to college, we want to know what schools are LGBT friendly and not so friendly. Check out a sampling of our education reviews below. Submit a review today to help our LGBT individuals and families with their school choices.
